GANESH (NEWARI)
Description
A richly-coloured Newari style thangka of Ganesh painted in vibrant stone colour. Ganesh, the pot-bellied and elephant-headed god of wisdom and success, is one of the most beloved of all the Hindu pantheon, and is propitiated before all other gods. The story goes that his father Shiva cut off his head in anger, later replacing it with the first head he saw – that of an elephant. His ‘vehicle’, a small shrew, can be seen at his feet, while in his hands he holds a rosary, an axe, a radish and a bowl of laddhus, his favourite sweet.
