MANJUSHRI (GOLD)
Description
A wonderfully proportioned and well-defined portrayal of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. His flaming sword cuts through ignorance to bring the ultimate knowledge symbolised by the wisdom book, prajnaparamita, atop the lotus in his left hand. Below sit Avalokitesvara and Vajrapani, Bodhisattvas of Compassion and Power respectively who along with Manjushri form a trio of aspects required for enlightenment. Above sits Amitabha Buddha in dhyana (‘meditation’) mudra.
What is a Bodhisattva? A Bodhisattva is essentially a Buddhist deity who has renounced Buddhahood, instead staying within the cycle of birth and rebirth in order to alleviate the suffering of others.
