KALACAKRA MANDALA (‘WHEEL OF TIME’ MANDALA)
Description
A 24-carat gold gold rendition of the Kalachakra Mandala. The Kalachakra Tantra is the chief text of a particular school of Tantric Buddhism which arose in India in the tenth century, but which has assumed greater importance for Tibetan Buddhism. The Dalai Lama puts great emphasis on the Kalachakra Tantra and often gives initiations around the world.
The mandala can be visualised as a kind of palace viewed from above, with 3 main inner areas separated from each other by gates, which here appear flattened into two dimensions. The inner Mind-Mandala Palace here contains an Om, symbolising KalachakraVishvamata. The 8 dots outside of this, on 8 lotus petals, symbolise the Sakti goddesses. The next building is the Speech-Mandala palace, containing sixty-four speech goddessed on eight eight-petalled lotuses. The next building, the Body-Mandala palace, contains 12 lotuses representing the months, on which dance 360 deities of the days of the year. The ring of Sanskrit seed mantras refer to various deities, many connected to the zodiac or otherwise related to space and time. The mandala should be ‘entered’ through the outermost, purificatory, ring of fire. The mandala can therefore be seen as a kind of cosmic description, but can also be interpreted on levels related to our inner ecology of nerves and other more subtle structures.
